Additional Info

No pressure. No massive kit required. Just your creativity.

This category is for anyone who loves makeup and wants to show what they can do. No qualifications. No fancy products. No experience needed. Whether you’re into soft glam, full glam, tribal-inspired detail, bold colour, festival looks, fantasy makeup or artistic face painting, this is your space to create something that reflects your style.

You can use whatever you’ve got. Seriously. A few palettes, a couple of brushes, your favourite concealer and a beauty blender? That’s enough. This isn’t about having every product. It’s about your ideas and how you bring them to life. It’s not about perfection. It’s about expression, resourcefulness and showing us what makeup means to you.

Soft Glam, Full Glam or Bridal-Inspired? You’re in.

If you love a polished wearable look, think glowing skin, soft tones, blended neutrals or a bold red lip, this one’s for you.

Helpful tips:
• Aim for even skin, whether matte or glowy
• Use soft contouring and highlight to enhance features naturally
• Choose eyeshadow colours that work well together like browns, bronzes, peachy tones or dusty pinks
• A red lip and winged liner is always a classic combo
• False lashes are recommended if you have them but they’re not essential
• Try to use a model without lash extensions as it’s much easier to work on their eyes
• You don’t need to spend money, just use what you already have
• Accessories like veils or clips are welcome as long as they support the look, not distract from it

Bold Colour, Art or Festival Feels More Your Style?

Amazing. This is the space to create something a little wild, a little extra or completely original.

Tips to help you go for it:
• Start with an idea or vibe, like tribal lines, bold shapes, strong colours or cultural inspiration
• Use colour, shape and texture in creative ways
• Add gems, glitter, paint or accessories if it fits your look, as long as it’s safe for skin
• You can style hair before the event or include it in your competition time
• Use whatever products you already have on hand
• This is about creativity, not perfection, so don’t worry if it’s not flawless

Quick Need-to-Knows

• Time limit: 2 hours
• Bring a model you’re comfortable working with
• All products used must be safe for skin
• You’ll be judged on creativity, application, finish and how well your final look connects with your face chart

Face Chart: Your Plan on Paper

Everyone must complete a face chart before comp day. This is a visual plan to help the judges understand your concept and see how you’ve brought it to life.

You’ll receive a template and instructions to guide you.

What to know:
• Your face chart must be done before the event and brought with you
• It should show the colours, layout and overall feel of your look
• It’s totally fine if your final makeup changes slightly on the day
• You won’t be judged on your drawing skills, just on how well the idea matches your finished work

Open Canvas is all about expression, not perfection.

You don’t need a full kit. You don’t need training. You just need to love makeup and show what you can do with what you’ve got.

Be polished. Be colourful. Be messy. Be glam. Be you.

To keep things fair and true to the spirit of this competition, the following rules apply:

Eligibility
This competition is open to amateur makeup artists aged 16–25 who currently reside in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Gympie or anywhere in between. We’ve chosen this age bracket and location criteria to keep the playing field fair and to give younger, emerging local artists the opportunity to get a genuine head start in the industry. You must not have completed accredited training in makeup artistry.

This includes:

  • Any nationally recognised qualifications in Makeup Artistry

It is okay if you have attended:

  •  A single-day masterclass
  •  A mini workshop
  •  A look-and-learn demo.
  •  Makeup workshops

These are considered informal and do not disqualify you.

Conflict of Interest
To keep things fair, anyone who has completed a short course with The Art of Makeup Society (including the Elite Event & Bridal Short Course) cannot register. If you’ve attended one of our workshops, masterclasses or SPFX events, you’re still welcome to enter.

General Rules
You must provide your own model for the competition. We do not provide models. All competitors must bring their own makeup kit, tools and disposables.

  • We do not supply makeup products.
  • We can provide a basic brush roll for use on the day
  • All products used must be safe for use on human skin.
  • You must arrive at the designated time provided once your entry has been accepted.

It’s totally okay if your kit is small or limited. This event is about creativity and skill, not the size or brand of your products.
